MEL TILLIS is a bona fide American entertainment legend, and Raven presents two of his original, classic country albums – Sawmill (MGM, 1973) and Stomp Them Grapes (MGM, 1974) – finally available on CD for the first time. Tillis was one of Nashville’s most enduring personalities, scoring 20 Top 5 Country hits throughout the 1970s, and both albums remain highly sought-after works. His early career kicked off writing hit songs for Webb Pierce, Ray Price and many others. He went on to become one of the most prolific and versatile songwriters in country music, and was equally diverse as a performer. He won the CMA Entertainer of the Year award in 1976. Sawmill and Stomp Them Grapes are two of the most playful and raunchy honky-tonk albums of his career.

Sawmill yielded the hits ‘Sawmill’ (#2) and ‘Thank You for Being You’ (#21) while Stomp Them Grapes featured the hit title track (#3) and ‘Midnight, Me and The Blues’ (#2). Of the five bonus tracks, a further two were Top 10 country hits – ‘Commercial Affection’ (#8), ‘Brand New Mister Me’ (#8) – while ‘Best Way I Know How’ and his duet with Sherry Bryce ‘Take My Hand’ are near-perfect examples of his uncanny ability to deliver the most affecting and entertaining of songs.
